HOMETOWN: NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH | DOB: NOVEMBER 14, 1996
For the second straight year, 28-year-old Matt Mills will drive the No. 42 J.F. Electric / Utilitra Chevrolet Silverado for Niece Motorsports in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.
Mills grew up in New Philadelphia, Ohio, by way of Lynchburg, Virginia. As a first-generation driver, he began racing Junior Champ Karts at age 12 before moving up to a full-size pavement Modified in 2012. In his first season racing in the Modifieds division, Mills won four feature races and was eventually crowned as the Midvale Speedway Rookie of the Year.
Progressing in 2013, Mills transitioned into Outlaw Super Late Models where he saw similar success over the course of the next two seasons. After winning a race and finishing top-five in the track championship, Mills joined the JEGS / CRA All-Star tour for various Super Late Model starts in 2015.
Following his career at the regional level, Mills set his eyes on his NASCAR Truck Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016. That year, he made four starts for SS-Greenlight Racing to become acclimated to the larger tracks on the schedule.
The next year in 2017, Mills continued to make sporadic Truck Series starts, and soon became eligible to make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Phoenix Raceway for BJ McLeod Motorsports. Mills made a combined total of 10 national series starts that season.
In 2018, Mills continued to hone his craft for different teams in the Xfinity Series, along with a one-off start for DGR-Crosley Racing in the Truck Series. It was in that season where he first developed a relationship with his longtime sponsor, J.F. Electric, who remains a strong supporter of his to this day.
From 2019-2022, Mills ran the majority of the Xfinity Series schedule and continued to gain valuable experience. Mills captured his first top-10 at Daytona International Speedway in 2019, and would continue on as a journeyman for four years in the series.
In 2023, Mills decided to make a shift over to the Truck Series when he received the opportunity of a lifetime to drive for Kyle Busch Motorsports. In his first start with the team at Richmond Raceway, Mills started and finished the race in the top-five for the first time in his career.
After realizing his potential behind the wheel of top-tier equipment, Mills caught the eye of Niece Motorsports’ team owner, Al Niece. Later that year, a deal was struck to place Mills in a competitive ride for his first true full-time season.
Last year, Mills drove the team’s No. 42 entry to two top-10s, including his series-best finish with a fourth-place showing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Having made his first NCTS starts at several tracks, 2024 was viewed as a ‘learning’ year for Mills to gain experience in Truck Series competition.
Now, with a full year under his belt, Mills is ready to take on 2025 with a boost of momentum.
