Austin Wayne Self readies third Phoenix start in penultimate race of 2018

AVONDALE, Ariz. – 21 races down and two to go.With the checkered flag of the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season near, Niece Motorsports driver Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) heads to ISM Raceway (Phoenix) for Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 looking for his second top-10 finish of the year.Self, 22, will make his third start at Phoenix’s 1.0-mile oval and while his prior finishes haven’t been enthusiastic, the driver is hoping to change the statistics aboard his No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado in the penultimate Truck Series race of the season.“Even though we haven’t had the results we were hoping for in the past at Phoenix, I’m hoping we can change our luck with a strong finish on Friday night,” said Self. “It’s hard to believe that there are just two races left in the year – but I feel like they are two races that we can go out and compete well and end our year on a high note.”Phoenix has undergone a facelift for Friday night’s race and even though Self’s previous track time in Avondale will be beneficial, the Austin, Texas native says the tone of the race will change significantly --- especially knowing the location of the start-finish line.“Over the years, this race has always been one of the more exiting races,” added Self. “It’s the last race in the Playoffs before the championship race and it’s always been a race where some of the smaller teams can shine because of the track’s layout.“But with the start-finish line now being located near Turn 2 – near the dog leg, it just pegs that excitement level and should produce some incredible racing.”Gutting out his 17th top-20 of the season last Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway, Self says even though his Niece Motorsports team hasn’t produced as many top-10 finishes as they’ve wanted so far, he’s proud of the consistency his team has shown.“We’ve had a lot of highlights this year with some strong performances – even if the finishes don’t always show it,” added Self. “I’d like to think if everything works out – we could add two more top-10s to our platter to close out the year. That’s our goal.“My crew chief Arthur Haire and I really have been working well together over the past couple months and I think that shows in our consistency. I appreciate his hard work, and all of the Niece team and we’ll go into the final two races with a positive outlook and hope that mindset pays off with strong results on the track.”After 21 races, Self sits 12th in the series’ standings. He carries an average finish of 16.6 entering Phoenix.Like last year, the Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program and AM Technical Solutions will also support Self in his 62nd career start.GO TEXAN represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.Along with its signature mark in the shape of Texas, GO TEXAN celebrates, promotes and supports the business savvy and plainspoken grit Texas agriculture is known throughout the world.Don’t mess with Texas, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle and Kreuz Market will serve as associate partners in the 22nd race of the year.In 62 NCWTS races, the 2015 ARCA Racing Series Rookie of the Year has one top-five (second at Daytona 2017) and four top-10 finishes.
